President’s Corner – February 2024
My Fellow Alumni,

The location for our Spring Banquet has changed!! The registration form for the banquet can be found in this newsletter. The location is at Parkway Place, in the Mt. Vernon Room. This is at the former Parkway Plaza located where S. Detroit Avenue and the Anthony Wayne Trail come together. The hotels nearby are the Hampton Inn on Reynolds Rd. in Maumee, the Courtyard by Marriott on Dussel Dr. in Maumee, and Homewood Suites by Hilton also in Maumee. The hotels are about 2 to 4 miles from the banquet. None offer shuttle service though we asked. We were able to find a location for the same date, day, and time as planned. Thanks to Joyce, Jan, and Mary for their work on this. The class of 1974, the Golden Class, will be our honored class but we hope many from other classes will join us.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of our last graduating class of 1999 and the closing of our cherished school of nursing.

Your alumni board met with Tad Sobieszczanski from the TFO, formerly known as the Delp Company to talk about the state of our finances. In 2002, the board made the move of our money from the St. Vincent Foundation to The Delp Company. At that time $750,000 was available. Over the years we have awarded over $1,000,000 in scholarships and still have over $1,00,000 in our accounts. The move of our resources was a prudent step by the board at that time. The impact on nursing education is immense. St. Vincent School of Nursing is still educating nurses, 25 years after it closed. I am honored to work with our Board and thank these ladies for their service. At the close of 2023, we had awarded 7.24% of our assets in educational support.

You have received, recently, a ballot that is due back by April 1st and a dues notice that can be returned now. In 2023 we had 388 paid members. Please support us by returning these. As you know, the cost of postage has gone up for all of us. Recently, a board member encountered a member concerned about the cost of the banquet. We have always honored the 50-year class as our guests and the alumni cover their costs. In addition, the meal itself, cost more than the $35 we ask you to pay. This year the meal alone will cost $42 per person. Our alumni funds will pick up the difference. So please help us continue to foster collegiality and friendship, as well as education. Come join us at the banquet.

Last summer, you were notified of the death of several members of our dear alumni. They included Rose Mary Watson, Mary Kay Manion Ryan, and Sharlotte Saurer Turin. Contributions have been received in their honor to the Alumni Association. In addition, Rose Mary, long our Treasurer, left money for us in her will. We received just over $9,000 from her estate. Thank you to those who contributed in memory of these alumni. Thank you, Rose Mary, for remembering us.

Rose Mary also left a medal and relic she received from Sister Dorothy Cooper, of St. Marguerite d’Youville. I have taken custody of these tiny items and praying to St. Marguerite. The back pain that was going to cause me to have surgery last July is gone. Several of you sent me notes of support, as this event was pending. I was able to return to Pastoral volunteering, taking Communion to our St. Vincent patients.

More recently, I have been bothering St. Marguerite again as I have had a cardiac event, requiring a cardiac catheterization, stent, and now cardiac rehab. So please keep me in your prayers. My thanks to all of you. My care at St. Vincent was wonderful. Several of my caregivers had received scholarships from our Alumni. Several remembered me as their educator.

The next newsletter will be after the banquet. Please send news and articles of information to Chris Silka or any of the board members. We continue to meet monthly at my home and share new news or old anecdotes that help us grow.

Blessings to all of you,

Pat Rice Yancy’67
Alumni President.

Cliff Note Version of the Scholarships: for criteria and applications visit: www.toledostvincentalumni.org

The John and Nellie Baillet Scholarship
Virginia (Pat) Baillet Altschuller established this scholarship in honor of her parents. It contains both an endowed component and an interest component. We can spend only from the interest fund. This scholarship was created to provide a financial resource for undergraduate nursing students, who are relatives of St. Vincent School of Nursing Alumni.

The Consolidated Fund
Merges scholarships were founded by the Alumni to honor their mentors and role models, specifically Sister DeCary, Sister Hartman, Sister Cousineau, and Miss Eleanor Walsh. These funds support nursing education for undergraduate, graduate, and special education that leads to certification and continuing education allowing for the awarding of discretionary funds for special situations, and, support the Alumni Association. The Human Resource Fund allows nurses, not our alumni to have access to short-term educational funds.
